Abstract Even with the growing advance in ethnobotanical studies, the amount of data that inventory the uses and knowledge associated with the biodiversity of medicinal plants existing in urban and periurban backyards in the Amazon region is still incipient. This article aimed to carry out a study of medicinal plants in rural backyards in the municipality of São Miguel do Guamá, Pará, valuing traditional knowledge and contributing to local biodiversity. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 23 residents, selected by non-probabilistic sampling. The importance index (IVs) and the agreement on the main uses (CUP) were calculated. There were records of 80 medicinal recipes, from the use of 65 species. The most representative families were Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Lamiaceae. The importance value index was attributed to Melissa officinalis L. and to the agreement of main uses of Alternanthera sp., Melissa officinalis L., Plectranthus neochilus Schltr, and Chenopodium ambrosioides L. The highest values of agreement regarding corrected main uses (CUPc) were from Melissa officinalis L., Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf., and Alternanthera sp. Flu, fever, and diarrhea were the most prevalent health problems. The community preserves traditional medicine customs in health care and this translates into the way of life of these people and the intense circulation of medicinal plants in the backyards.

Resumen Incluso con el creciente avance de los estudios etnobotánicos, la cantidad de datos que hacen un inventario de los usos y conocimientos asociados a la biodiversidad de las plantas medicinales existentes en los patios traseros urbanos y periurbanos de la región amazónica es aún incipiente. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo realizar un estudio de plantas medicinales en patios rurales en el municipio de São Miguel do Guamá, Pará, valorando los conocimientos tradicionales y contribuyendo a la biodiversidad local. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a 23 residentes, seleccionados mediante muestreo no probabilístico.

Resumo Mesmo com o avanço crescente nos estudos etnobotânicos, ainda é incipiente a quantidade de dados que inventariam os usos e saberes associados à biodiversidade das plantas medicinais existentes em quintais urbanos e periurbanos da região amazônica. No presente artigo, objetivou-se realizar estudo das plantas medicinais em quintais rurais no município de São Miguel do Guamá, Pará, valorizando os saberes tradicionais e contribuindo para o conhecimento da biodiversidade local. Entrevistas semiestruturadas foram realizadas com 23 moradores, selecionados por amostragem não probabilística. Foram calculados o índice de importância (IVs) e a concordância quanto aos usos principais (CUP). Houve registro de 80 receitas medicinais, a partir do uso de 65 espécies. As famílias mais representativas foram Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae e Lamiaceae. O índice de valor de importância foi atribuído a Melissa officinalis L. e à concordância de usos principais de Alternanthera sp., Melissa officinalis L., Plectranthus neochilusSchltr e Chenopodium ambrosioides L. Os maiores valores de concordância quanto aos usos principais corrigidos (CUPc) foram de Melissa officinalis L., Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf. e Alternanthera sp. Gripe, febre e diarreia foram os problemas de saúde mais prevalentes. A comunidade preserva costumes da medicina tradicional em atenção à saúde, e isso traduz-se no modo de vida dessas pessoas e na intensa circulação de plantas medicinais nos quintais.

Abstract Palm trees are striking elements of tropical forests and provide many jobs for Amazonian populations. The research's objective was to identify the palm trees present in the local way of life, the one with the highest consensus value for use in two riverside communities in Abaetetuba, Pará, and evaluate traditional knowledge and implications for residents' way of life. The study was carried out in Rio Urubueua de Fátima (R.U.F) and Nossa Senhora dos Anjos (N.S.A). The interviewees' selection was made by non-probabilistic sampling. The data were obtained through participant observation, semi-structured interview, non-specific induction, annotation in a field diary, and audiovisual record. Of the total palm trees cited, the Ethno-species Inajá was chosen due to its consensus use-value with values of 0.438 for R.U.F. (with 36 citations) and 0.484 N.S.A. (27). Three categories of use were identified: food, construction, and utensils. The high consensus of service is justified by the wide use from its various parts, being a reference as a plant of full use for making it possible to obtain food, protection, shelter, and utensils. Its use is related to the vast repertoires of the interlocutors received from their ancestors. This implies the importance of a species for maintaining people's social lives in two Amazonian riverside communities that depend on nature for their livelihood and quality of life.

Abstract This article analyzes the biographies of three riverine women whose research is based on their social roles in providing care through traditional medicine. Their “life stories” show their own perceptions of how they construct and reconstruct their healing practices to address illnesses, always involving interactions with the environment and with religious traditions (most notably pajelança, Catholicism and Pentecostalism). The islands of Murutucum and Combu in Belém are the anthropogenic environments in which these specialists reside and work, watershed ecosystems for several rivers in Pará and a small portion of the Amazon River that drain into the Atlantic Ocean. The traditional cures present on these islands were analyzed from the narratives of these three specialists over a period of almost two years, with incursions, interviews and various types of in situ observations. The social and environmental framework and different religious expressions are seen to directly influence the diagnosis and therapeutic treatment proposed by these women, who have different yet complementary knowledge despite inhabiting the same ecosystem and being part of the same social group.

Resumo Este artigo analisa biografias de três mulheres ribeirinhas que têm como base investigativa os seus papéis sociais no cuidar através da medicina tradicional. Seus ‘relatos de vida’ transparecem as suas próprias percepções na construção e reconstrução de suas práticas de cura no enfrentamento de doenças, sempre levando em consideração as interações construídas com o meio e com tradições religiosas – dentre as quais se destacam a pajelança, o catolicismo e o pentecostalismo. As ilhas belenenses do Murutucum e do Combu são os ambientes antropogênicos nos quais as especialistas residem e atuam, ecossistemas de deságue hidrográfico de diversos rios paraenses e uma pequena parte do rio Amazonas no oceano Atlântico. As tipologias de curas tradicionais presentes nas ilhas foram analisadas a partir das narrativas destas três especialistas, num período de quase dois anos, com incursões, entrevistas e diversos tipos de observações in situ. Ao final, pode-se perceber que o quadro social e ambiental, bem como as diferentes expressões religiosas manifestas influenciam diretamente no diagnóstico e no tratamento terapêutico proposto por essas mulheres – que, apesar de habitarem o mesmo ecossistema e integrarem um grupo social comum, possuem saberes distintos, contudo, complementares.

Resumo Este artigo aborda o processo de implementação de acervos etnobotânicos no Brasil, com enfoque nas coleções da Amazônia brasileira e sua importância frente às metas da Estratégia Global para a Conservação de Plantas (GSPC) no país.Foram identificadas quatro recentes coleções etnobotânicas no Brasil: duas encontram-se no Sudeste – no Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (JBRJ) e no Jardim Botânico da Fundação Zoobotânica de Minas Gerais (JBFZB-BH), – e duas no estadodo Pará – no Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG) e na Universidade do Estado do Pará (UEPA) –, reunindo mais de mil e quinhentas amostras, distribuídas em diferentes categorias de uso, com destaque para a medicinal. Estas coleçõesrefletem a importância da flora dos biomas Mata Atlântica, Cerrado e Amazônia em diversos contextos socioculturais e estão relacionadas às atividades voltadas a atingir pelo menos três das metas delineadas pela GSPC. Portanto, acervosdessa natureza devem ser encorajados e apoiados, dado o seu inestimável valor científico e cultural.

Abstract This article addresses the process of establishing ethnobotanical collections in Brazil, with a focus on collections from the Brazilian Amazon and their importance in relation to the goals of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) in the country. Four recent ethnobotanical collections are identified in Brazil: two in the Southeast (JBRJ in Rio de Janeiro and JBFZ in Belo Horizonte) and two in the state of Pará (MPEG in Belém and UEPA). These collections include more than one thousand and five hundred samples sorted into different categories of use, particularly medicinal specimens, reflecting the importance of plants from the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Amazon biomes in various social and cultural contexts. These collections are related to activities to attain at least three of the goals outlined in the GSPC, and consequently collections of this nature should be encouraged and supported, given their invaluable scientific and cultural value.

ABSTRACT Historical ethnobotanical studies of medicinal plants reveal important information about traditional practices of human groups and influence current understanding of the use of plants. The present article describes the ethnopharmacology of mururé (Brosimum acutifolium) since the XVIII century for the treatment of syphilis and correlates past and present therapeutic use. This information contributes to the appreciation of historical records in the contemporary use of natural products. The analysis of documental records is important for comparing information available overtime about the medicinal use and application of specific species. The present research was based on the analysis of a Jesuit work and other complementary documents. The medicinal effect of mururé is attributed to its latex, and dosage and adverse reactions are described. Historical documents stand out as valuable assets for pharmaceutical technology because they allow comparisons to be made between past and present uses of species as curative agents.

Resumo A pesquisa objetivou avaliar a importância das plantas alimentícias na manutenção do modo de vida dos ribeirinhos afetados pela Hidrelétrica Belo Monte, num cenário de mudanças socioambientais. Com 60 Unidades Familiares, realizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas, observações participantes, turnês guiadas e coletas botânicas. Os dados foram interpretados quali e quantitativamente, empregando-se o teste de Wilcoxon para análise estatística e os índices de Saliência Cultural e Valor de Importância das espécies. Foram identificadas 143 espécies vegetais, das quais registraram-se 88 alimentícias, pertencentes a 36 famílias botânicas. Houve diferença significativa na quantidade de espécies cultivadas antes e após a usina, com declínio de 45%. Observaram-se três espaços de cultivo: quintal, roça e floresta/mata. Este estudo detectou forte tradição e dependência das famílias com o modo de vida à beira do rio e a produção de alimentos. Apesar dos riscos socioambientais previstos, a perda dos territórios gerou impactos de amplas dimensões, incluindo a produção de alimentos e as identidades culturais do ser humano individualmente e em sociedade.

Abstract The research aimed to evaluate the importance of plant food in maintaining the lifestyles of the ribeirinhos who are affected by the Belo Monte Dam. We interviewed 60 families affected by Belo Monte. The data collection was done through recorded semi-structured interviews, participant observations, guided tours and botanical collection. The data was interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively using the following the Wilcoxon test for statistical analysis. We identified 143 species, it was registered 88 food plants, distributed in 36 botanical families. When comparing the above-mentioned plants, before and after Belo Monte, there was a significant difference, with a reduction of 45% in the number of species. Three systems of traditional cultivation were observed, yard, garden and forest areas. Despite the expected socio-environmental risks, the loss of territories has generated wide-ranging impacts, including food production and the individual and societal cultural identities of human.

Resumen Esta investigación buscó evaluar la importancia de las plantas alimenticias en el mantenimiento del modo de vida de los ribereños afectados por la Hidroeléctrica Belo Monte, en un escenario de cambios socioambientales. Con participación de 60 Unidades Familiares, fueron realizadas entrevistas semiestructuradas, observaciones participantes, caminatas guiadas y colectas botánicas. Los datos fueron interpretados cualitativa y cuantitativamente, empleando la prueba de Wilcoxon para análisis estadístico y los índices de Destaque Cultural y Valor de Importancia de las especies. Fueron identificadas 143 especies vegetales, de las cuales se registraron 88 alimenticias, pertenecientes a 36 familias botánicas. Se encontró diferencia significativa en la cantidad de especies cultivadas antes y después de la Hidroeléctrica, con una reducción de 45%. También, se observó tres espacios de cultivo: patio trasero, chacra y bosque/mata. A pesar de los riesgos socioambientales previstos, la pérdida de territorios generó impactos de gran alcance, incluida la producción de alimentos y las identidades culturales del ser humano, individual y en sociedad.

As investigações sobre a morfologia de plântulas, antes do surgimento dos metafilos, têm demonstrado rico potencial para estudos sistemáticos, inclusive testando a monofilia de gêneros de Leguminosae. Além disso, proporcionam a descoberta de estruturas transitórias, basais ou derivadas, que podem estabelecer conexões nem sempre ocorrentes no indivíduo adulto. A natureza dos cotilédones, de reserva ou folíaceos, é uma das principais características das leguminosae. O tipo de germinação constitui um dos caracteres mais relevantes para diferenciar suas espécies, assim como a forma do limbo, da margem, do ápice, posição dos eofilos, presença ou ausência de látex ou resina, relação comprimento/largura dos cotilédones, tamanho e número de pinas, pecíolo alado ou não, que permitem caracterizar famílias, gêneros e até mesmo espécies. Em Leguminosae, a morfologia de plântulas corrobora a identificação das plantas no campo e ainda fornece subsídios para delimitações genéricas e infragenéricas na família. De uma maneira geral as plântulas de Caesalpinioideae e Mimosoideae são epígeas, com cotilédones foliáceos; em Papilionoideae predominam plântulas hipógeas com cotilédones de reserva e extremamente variadas em termos morfológicos, principalmente nas tribos com espécies lenhosas.

The study of seedling morphology, before metaphyll sprouting, is a powerful tool in systematic studies in order to help identify monophyletic genera of Leguminosae. The study of seedling morphology leads to the discovery of temporary, basal and derived structures that are helpful to establish phylogenetic relationships, but may not be present in the adult individual. Cotyledon type, foliaceous or reserve, is one of the most important species characteristics. It facilitates the understanding of important strategic evolutionary changes as well as the ecological and evolutionary history of species of plants in relation to their habitat. The type of germination constitutes one of the most important characteristics used to identify species. In addition, characteristics such as shape of the limbus, edge, apex, eophyll position, presence or absence of latex or resin, length/width relationship of cotyledons, size and number of pinnae, as well as petiole winged or not, allow the identification of families, genera or even species. In Leguminosae, the study of plant morphology is used to confirm plant identification in the field, as well as to delimit generic and infrageneric identification in this family. Overall, Caesalpinioideae and Mimosoideae seedlings are considered epigeal, with foliaceous-type cotyledons; on the other hand in the Papilionoideae there is a predominance of hypogeal species with reserve cotyledons. The latter has also great variety, especially in tribes with ligneous species.
